TATA THE INDUSTRIAL CONGLOMERATE

TATA THE FATHER OF INDIAN INDUSTRIAL INDUSTRIES

THE BEGINNING OF JAMSETJI TATA REGIN

Jamsetji Tata was born to Nusserwanji Tata and Jeevanbai Tata on 3 march 1839, in Gujarat. He came from a family of priests his father broke tradition and became the first businessman in his family. After graduating from Elphinstone college in the year 1858 he joined his father export-trading firm and it was the perfect time to take advantage of the economic reforms from the British raj which ruled India back then, over the years he travelled to America, Europe and few other parts of the world to establish a network of distribution for his father company. back then he realized India has true potential to be the global leader of the textile industry which was dominated by the British at that time.

THE BEGINNING OF TATA

After learning what he needs from his father company he started his own trading company at the age of 29 in the year 1868, In the year 1869, he bought a bankrupt oil mill and converted into a cotton mill which seems to be an unimportant event but was the very being of a multinational conglomerate. Jamsetji Tata has always cared about the people of India and always wanted to good from them. In his companies, he enacted policies like offering sickness benefits and pensions to his employees which were not there in other companies and most of the Indians never heard of the policies back then until it was started.

THE IDEOLOGY OF TATA

Jamsetji Tata has more major goals in his life, in fact, he strived for his goals of, setting up an iron and steel company, a world-class education institute, India's first hydroelectric plant and hotels.as a matter of fact when Jamestji Tata was on a business trip in Mumbai he was not allowed in a hotel(not only he every Indian was not allowed in that hotel)  he felt very bad and decided he would build a hotel which would be more luxurious ever and affordable by everyone. During his lifetime only one of his four dreams were full filled which was Taj Hotel which was open on 3 December 1903.

JAMSETJI TATA

Jamsetji Tata died in the year 1904 on a business trip in Germany. He was a great man who always put his country interests first rather than his own, he has helped so people. in fact, he donated his own land to build the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore that much he valued about education. He was a true man dedicated to business and help people through it really big salutes to you, sir. After his death, the baton was passed to his sons.

DREAMS COME TRUE

Jamsetji Tata's elder son took over his company in the year 1904 after his father's death, as a good son to a father Jamsetji's dreams were fulfilled by his son's. In the year 1907 Tata Iron and Steel company (TISCO) which was India's first steelwork. In the year 1912 India's first cement plant was built, in the year 1919 first insurance company was built in India. By the time the leadership was passed to the next generation in 1938, the Tata sons were comprised of 14 different companies.
In the year 1938 Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata also known as JRD Tata ( he was a distant relative of Jamsetji Tata )became the chairman of the company he was working for the company from 1925. In 1929 he obtained India's first pilot license which later became his first major project at Tata. In 1938 Tata also started passenger which was also helped the British in second world war.

JRD TATA

After India's independence, we think that it would be beneficial and helpful to Tata's but in reality, the economic reforms from the newly formed government were against private business. Jawaharlal Nehru India's first prime minister saw how successful was Tata airlines he decided to nationalize it in 1953 without any one's opinion he was kept airline's chairman till 1977. Over the  52 years of his leadership, JRD Tata expanded Tata sons from 14 enterprises to 95 enterprises he is the one how started Tata motors in the year 1945 which is one of the world's largest passenger vehicle producer he also grew the assets of the Tata Group from US$101 million to over US$5 billion. In order to do all this, he lowered Tata sons ownership.

THE ERA OF RATAN TATA

As Tata sons lowered its ownership JRD started losing control of his own subsidiaries, to save them he sent Ratan Tata later who became chairman of the company. He was working for Tata from the year 1962 and he is also the great-grandchildren of Jamsetji Tata. In the year 1991, he became chairman which was the right time for Tata company (not only for Tata but for all other companies ) as economic liberalization act was passed in India. But it was also very tough because the economy was open for everyone which means more competition.

RATAN TATA

It was very hard to Ratan Tata to control all 100 companies. He then reorganized all the companies into 7 different sectors which work on their own without much depending on their other company sectors. In the year 1999 Ratan Tata and his team were humiliated by ford motor. Ford motors were interested in buying Tata motors but they said in a harsh and disrespectful manner but Ratan Tata decided not to sell. At that time ford owned Jaguar and Landrover as an interesting turn of events, Tata bought Jaguar and Landrover from Ford motors in the year 2008.

LEGACY OF TATA

Tata has been acquiring international companies from the early 2000s, they started it by buying Tetley in the year 2000 from then there was no stopping them as they acquired 100s of other business over the years. Today the majority of their revenue comes outside of India, It has more than 100 companies which were located in 100 countries and being exported in more than 150 different countries, in fact, it has more employees than Samsung group. Tata always trusted in its leadership and helping people. If Tata didn't donate their money they would be in the top 5 richest companies and Ratan Tata would be the richest man.

"The strong live and the weak die. There is some bloodshed, and out of it emerges a much leaner industry, which tends to survive."
